From 17 February to 10 October 1971, Trooper Barnby deployed to South Vietnam as a member of Two Five Patrol, F Troop, 2 Squadron, SASR. Based out of the 1st Australian Task Force base at Nui Dat, Phuoc Tuy Province, they conducted clandestine reconnaissance and offensive operations against the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong.

2 "sabre" Squadron, Special Air Service (SAS), was raised in September 1964 as part of the SAS's expansion into a regiment. To prepare this new and inexperienced unit for service in Borneo, the squadron conducted a major training exercise in Lae, New Guinea, from October to November 1965.

2 Squadron arrived in Vietnam in February 1968 to replace 1 Squadron. It conducted its first patrol on 5 March and by the end of month had completed 29 patrols. Up until that time the SAS had primarily concentrated on carrying out reconnaissance and surveillance patrols.
