A passage to the north of St Vitus Cathedral leads to the Powder Tower, also called Mihulka, which was built in the 15th century as part of the castle's defences. Later it became the workshop of cannon- and bell-maker Tomáš Jaroš, who cast the bells for St Vitus Cathedral. Today it houses an exhibition on the history of the Castle Guard.

Powder Tower. Most of the decoration has been destroyed over time, especially in 1757 when Prague was besieged by Prussian troops. A large part of the modern decoration was done between 1875 - 1886, carried out by Josef Mocker.

The Powder Tower is about 65 meters high. At a height of 44 meters there is a viewing platform that offers an impressive view of Prague's Old Town. There is no elevator, 186 partly very steep steps of the spiral staircase dating from 1592 lead to the viewing platform.

The Gothic Powder Tower in the Old Town used to be a gate to Prague in the middle ages. It was built in a ditch around the town´s ramparts, about 9 metres below the present ground. The future kings of Bohemia used to enter the town through this gate when they were on their coronation parade.
