I'm Italian. I think you were given the "instant" variety of caffè d'orzo (likely Orzoro or Orzo Bimbo brand?). It's a fine powder and 100% soluble. Conventional barley coffee is ground quite roughly but can indeed be used in moka pots or espresso machines. The taste is pretty nice although of course it's pretty distinguishable from coffee.
