Papeneiland is situated on one of the most picturesque corners of the city, right by the lovely Noordermarkt (a glorious food and bric a brac market) and at the intersection of two of Amsterdam's most gorgeous canals - the stunning Browersgracht (Brewer's Canal) and the Prinsengracht.

Cafe Papeneiland is one of the most authentic, inviting, and picturesque bruine kroegs (brown bars) in all of Amsterdam. Datining back to the mid 1600's (anno 1642), you can' t get much more authentic, one step in the door and the ambiance created by the leaded glass, wood paneled walls, and Delft tiles takes you right b.ack in time.

Despite its lofty age and reputation, Café t' Papeneiland still feels like a local pub (albeit one that predates the steam engine) and serves everything you'd expect from a Dutch neighbourhood watering hole, not to mention some of the finest apple pie in the entire city. Cafe 't Papeneiland (literally Pope Island) dates back to the Reformation Period when practising Catholic Mass publically was prohibited.The premises, built-in 1642, still conceals a tunnel in the basement that led to a secret Catholic church at Prinsengracht 7. That allowed for priests to be smuggled in and out from the Singel Canal.
