Longpark Pottery started in the early 1880s and is believed to have been set up by two Watcombe employees who had been laid off in 1883. The company was in the Long Park area of Torquay, and originally produced unglazed terracotta wares.

Cottages decorated by the sgraffito technique with slip colour infill were the mainstay of the tourist souvenir ware produced by the Torquay and South Devon potteries.

The building, with its Italianate tower, had originally been erected as a pumping station for Isambard Brunel's ill-fated 'atmospheric railway' in the mid-1800's but had never been used for its intended purpose.
