Road to James Bay would create 'open season' on Ontario's far north
The James Bay Road was born in June of 1971, when the aptly named engineering firm Desjardins, Sauriol and Associates met with government officials in Matagami, a small mining town located 400 miles south of Chisasibi. The firm was tasked with the construction of a basic road to the future Radisson site and the Cree settlement at Fort George.

The James Bay Road is where most people experience the raw power of the Rupert River. This Road crosses the Rupert just downstream from a massive set of spectacular rapids. There's a rest area with a viewing platform just off the road. The bridge itself also provides an excellent place from which to view the rapids.

The James Bay Road is a paved road leading north along the lower reaches of Hudson Bay. It provides access to four Cree communities located along the shore of James Bay, and extends north to Radisson, located at a large hydroelectric dam project. The James Bay Road (JBR from this point on) winds north from a logging town called Matagami, in the northern part of Quebec Province, Canada. It ends 384 miles later, at a town called Radisson, which is inhabited almost entirely by workers of the hydro-power stations nearby. The JBR is a remote locale; amenities and gas stations are not plentiful.

The James Bay Road is reached via Hwy 109. Km 0: "Route de la Baie James" -- The James Bay Road. Km 2: Bell River. This is the longest bridge on the James Bay Road. The Bell River flows into Matagami Lake. The northern part of the lake then becomes the Nottaway River which flows north to James Bay.

The James Bay Road is paved, so we didn't need heavy-duty off-road trucks. Our fleet numbered three. Jarek, Milosz, and Konrad came from Florida in a 2011 Range Rover Supercharged, riding on beefier tires but otherwise stock. The James Bay Road is 620 km long (388 miles). It is paved for its entire length. This road was originally built to carry loads of 300 tons, so the road has mostly gentle curves and hills and wide shoulders. However, there are sections which are very bumpy, and even if you drive at the posted speed limit of 100 km/h, you could wreck your car on.

210. Km 2. Bell River. This is the longest bridge on the James Bay Road. The Bell River flows into Matagami Lake. The northern part of the lake then becomes the Nottaway River which flows north to James Bay. You can drive carefully off the left side of the road here (going north) and park, and walk down to the river.

The James Bay Road starts 6 hours north of North Bay (Ontario). From there it is a full 620 km to Radisson, and a further 100 km to the shores of James Bay near Chisasibi. You should only drive this road with a well-maintained, reliable vehicle. A vehicle breakdown of any sort will likely be costly in terms of towing fees.
